It eventually cleared up, but after the clouds were gone it was possible to see the pollution:

Blue skies over Taiwan???
I went to Kaohsiung during winter for my brother's wedding reception. That city has to be the most polluted city I've ever seen since Beijing... Even trumps Seoul by a longshot!

Kaohsiung is very polluted. I was there for just one night, but my throat was burning from the air pollution. An English teacher there said, "you get used to it after a few days." I left before that... :)
re: polluted skies
Well, maybe that is one of the bright points in the downturn in the global economy is that with less production maybe the skies will clear up a little more.
