Learning Jeju Folk Culture

I've been taking weekend Korean classes at Booktown in Yeondong for the past few weeks. The teacher is a university student with limited English skills and I'm the only student in her weekend class (although I've heard that five or six show up for the Thursday class), but we've been able to manage. Anyways, I've recently learned that her studies are focused on folklore and that she has done some study on the local folklore of Hallim area (where one of my schools are). As my main interest is local history and culture, I'm also going to see if I could learn a bit about what it is that she's studied and if she could teach me a bit of the local customs as well as farmers' songs from Hallim area. So far, I've been able to learn a bit of the Jeju dialect and my students sometimes get a bit jolted when I suddenly use it. =)

Jeju Dialects

People in Jeju love it when you use the local dialect. Here is some info on Jeju dialect.

Jeju Hostels

Hallim

The teacher is a local of Hallim. I'm going to delve a bit deeper and see if there are aspects of language unique to that area. :)

One of my co-teachers at Gwi-il Middle School (prey4wind should know who he is) speaks Korean with a fairly heavy accent so it was quite easy to notice the uses of -kkwa.

Learning a bit of Jeju dialect

I've been learning a bit more about the Jeju dialect. Along with -kkwa, there's "-i kkwang" as Jeju's version of "i e yo."

There's a bit of regional varations, as prey4wind noted in that earlier post. According to the instructor, Hallim's spoken language is a bit soft in comparison to other parts of Jeju since it has good soil and is a more idyllic environment for agriculture while Seongsan was a harsher environment and thus people from that locale tend to use more energetic and louder speech.

Also, I've learned how to say "Please say it again" in the Tamna language. Not the Jeju dialect, but Tamna. =) I've heard from an acquaintance at KOTESOL that there's a Jeju language dictionary, but it's long been out of print...
