Spelling Game for Elementary School Kids

Target: Elementary school kids who are practicing spelling words

Duration: 5-8 minutes

Objective: Practice spelling and enjoying English

Name: Air Spelling Game

Instructions: Point your arm and finger out in front of you and have students do the same. Say a word students have been practicing. Say each letter out loud as you trace them with your finger in the air, one at a time. Have the students follow you and repeat each letter. Say the whole word and have students repeat once or twice when finished.

Ask for volunteers to come up to the front of the class and 'be the teacher'. They choose a word and lead the class in Air Spelling. Students have really enjoyed being the teacher!

Notes: I have not tried this game with 6th graders yet but it has worked very well with all elementray grades up to 5th.

Do you like? Grade 1-3

Model "Do you like <?>"  "Yes I like <?>", "No I don't like <?>".  Put picture of <?> on board twice and draw thumbs up beside one and thumbs down beside the other.  Get kids to copy down these pictures at the left hand side of their page (2 or 3 different items to begin with) and survey their friends, "Do you like <?>"  Kids will start to introduce their own new items as they get more confident.  Is a great way to bring the whole class up to speed on "Do you like".
