Here's another variation - for slightly more advanced students, you can have them alternate whispering the message to the next person in English and in their native language, so that each student is translating back and forth between their native language and English. It usually makes for some pretty amusing results!
Here's another variation, you can use the same activity to check grammar:
1.Give a sentence with a grammar mistake, e.g: I have 29.
2.Ss do the same, they pass the message whispering.
3. the "writer" has to write the correction for the sentence
A fun twist to make sure they whisper.... designate a "spy" for each team who can try to eavesdrop. Give the spies pieces of paper and pencils. If they can deliver the secret message before their opposing team does, they get the points.
