Private Students

People always say how strict immigration officials are in Korea but how often does someone get caught for teaching privately? Does anyone personally know someone who got busted?

The thing is, Korean people

The thing is, Korean people TALK TALK TALK and the women always get together and TALK and everyone knows eveyrone and everything about everyone they know. They live for it! SO--having your son/daugther tutored by a foreigner is very cool and, thus, something to brag about. This is how talk can get back to people.

They are very tricky about tutoring though, but do brag about it even if they are "tutoring and not actually tutoring". This is like if someone wants to be your "friend" and maybe buy you dinner every week and speak English with you. I can even be getting you coffee quite regularly and speaking English. Now, you chose your friends, but people may brag about this and along the grapvine it can turn into something.

The rule on tutoring is that Korean teachers, foreign teachers and (i think hawkgwon teachers) can't tutor, by law. University students however can and should tutor!

That all said, I do know people who have gotten caught and are obviously not working anymore. Korea takes this VERY SERIOUSLY. On the other hand, I also know people taking the risk because the money can be so good.

I've been very careful to

I've been very careful to avoid these situations, because I don't want trouble with immigration, and I don't like my dinner host lording it over her friends.
