The OTHER Side of the Kids

For a while, I thought that my students were generally good, though some can be totally wild and downright irritating in class. But it seems like they have a whole other side that I did not notice until recently. I just learned today that two of them were caught stealing a bike and two of them were caught for breaking into a restaurant late at night. They were on punishment every day this week - cleaning the whole school every afternoon, some love-stick sessions, and daily scoldings - but I had thought that it was simply because they were misbehaving in other classes since those punishments were customary for other offenses. Funny thing is that the four kids that were caught happened to be some of the best-behaved kids in my classes.

Natural Dr. Jekyll And Mrs. Hydes

To tie up the 'year', I hosted a spelling bee in each of my classes last week. To my surprise, I discovered that my most appallingly behaving students were wonderful spellers.

Other disturbances... students who seem attentive in class always ask their partners what's going on, two of the students who give me candy on a routine basis smoke cigarettes...

and the best ironical observation of all, the ones who sleep in class have superior test grades!

Perpetuates the theory... things just aren't as they seem.

Kids Sleeping in Korean Classrooms

In Japan, the kids who slept in my classes usually did it because they went to juku (hagwon) after school and got home around 10 or 11. Then, they would do their homework and end up going to bed around 2 or 3. Maybe the situation in Korea is similar....
