Seoraksan Mountain National Park

A walk through Seoraksan National Forest during fall when the leaves have turned to colors of yellow, red, and orange, is by far one of the best outdoor experiences I've had in Korea.  The beauty of the mountain peaks and valleys is enough to fill you with a sense of awe.

The right time to go to enjoy the fall colors  is going to be the last week of October and the first week in November.  If you want to see the colors in the higher elevations, I suggest going a week earlier.  A benefit of visiting in the fall, besides the colors, is that the temperature will be cooler and make hiking more enjoyable.

Seoraksan can be accessed easily from Sokcho, a small coastal city nearby the park.  One can catch a bus from the Sokcho bus terminal to the park entrance.  The bus ride takes about 40 minutes.

There are a few hostels and hotels in the area right outside of the park's main entrance.  If you are traveling with kids or older folks, I think booking a room in that area is the most convenient option.

Once you enter the park, you have a few options.  There is a cable car that will take you to a nearby peak and save you the hike.  And there are a few popular sites that you can visit by hiking to them including Sinheungsa Temple at the entrance, Bisondae, Biryong Waterfall, and Rocking Rock.

In one day, it's possible to visit Ulsanbawi (peak) and to walk the length of the main valley to Bisondae, my most recommended activities.  Along the way you will pass by Sinheungsa Temple and Rocking Rock.  If you start your hike before lunch, you should be able to hike this entire route before dark.  I'd plan an 8 hour day of hiking and resting for meals/snacks.

Ulsan Bawi Summit

Ulsanbawi is a moderately challenging hike, but offers you a great place to take a photo at the summit while standing next to the Korean flag.

Also, the valley that leads you to Bisondae is full of stunningly beautiful places where you can stop and have a picnic.  You will need to bring a high energy lunch with you anyways, so why not take a break along the way and enjoy the peacefulness of the valley?

Buddhist Temple Cave

From Bisondae, one can climb to a Buddhist temple-cave.  This hike is listed as 0.6km and requiring 50 minutes.  It is a hellish hike, as you must climb hundreds of steps to get there.  The view available to those who tuff it out is one you will not forget.

If you are like me, you will come home from your hike with many photos and memories of the beautiful scenery that seems like only belongs in stories and paintings.

Sitting at my desk and looking back, I can't simply recommend this trip; I have to insist that you take it.  This is one of the most beautiful places in Korea during the fall season.  It is a signature activity that represents the best of Korean outdoor travel.
