Armenia became the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as its officially state religion. The Armenian Church, official name Armenian Apostolic Church, itself dates back to the first century AD when, according to tradition, it was founded by Thaddaeus and Bartholomew, two of Jesus' apostles who preached in Armenia.

Gerhard Monastery, or "Spear Monastery was built in the fourth century to house one of Jesus' spears - hence the name. It was rebuilt in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries after being destroyed by Arab invaders in the ninth century. It is currently listed as a UNESCO building.
