Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, has a population of just over 2 million people. There are another million living in the metropolitan area including refugees and internally displaced persons.
The city dates back 2,000 years and, like other oil-rich cities, is currently benefiting from the high price of petroleum. Oil has been extracted from the ground in in Baku for over 1,000 years and industrial production began in the 1870s. By the early 20th century the city had over 3,000 oil wells with over two-thirds of them producing at industrial levels, and Baku produced more than half of the world's oil.
