The Kampung Ayer, or 'Water Village', is the most well known attraction in Brunei. A district of the capital Bandar Seri Begawan, Kampung Ayer has been around for more than 1300 years. The village houses more than 30,000 people and 3,000 structures including homes, hospitals, mosques, schools, restaurants, and everything in between.
It was dubbed the Venice of the East by Anotonio Pigafetta when he visited the village in 1521 with Ferdinand Magellan's fleet. The 3,000 buildings are connected by more than 36 kilometers of wooden boardwalk.
