Japanese Zen Rock Garden in Kyoto, Japan

Ryoan-ji Temple (Temple of the Peaceful Dragon) was built in 1450 at a former Fujiwara family estate in northwest Kyoto. The temple belongs to the Myoshinji sect of Rinzai Buddhism and has become synonymous with the temple's famous Karesansui (dry landscape) rock garden.

The garden, thought to be constructed at the end of the 15th century, measures 10 x 30 meters. The garden has no trees and is most famous for having 15 stones, only 14 of which can be seen from any angle.
