Temple of the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto, Japan

Kinkaku-ji, or the Golden Pavilion Temple, is the nickname by which Rokuon-ji, or Deer Garden Temple, is most commonly known. The Golden Pavilion was originally built in 1397 as a retirement villa for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Yoshimitsu's son converted the the structure into a Zen temple of the Rinzai sect.  The pond at the foot of the temple is called Kyoko-chi, or Mirror Pond.
