International Schools in Japan

What are international schools?

International schools are regular curriculum grade schools that teach all or most classes of their classes in English or some other foreign language. The schools usually have diverse student bodies and many student go on to higher education at institutions in English-speaking countries such as the US and Canada.

Some International schools in Japan are accredited and/or registered by organizations such as:

  • American Overseas Schools (AOS)
  • Council of International Schools (CIS)
  • East Asian Regional Council of Overseas Schools (EARCOS)
  • Japan Council of International Schools (JCIS)
  • New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC)

Employment

International schools in Japan pay well and getting a job at one is very competitive. You will generally need a teaching license from your home country either in the subject you teach or in Pre K/elementary education, depending on what grade you will be teaching.

Salary

Salary and benefits at international schools are higher than at regular English conversation schools as teachers generally need a teaching license from their home country. Yearly remuneration will usually be between 3 million - 6 million yen depending on teaching experience and number of years at the institution.

Housing

International schools in Japan will either provide dormitory housing for teachers or arrange for off-campus accommodations. Some schools will include housing in the contract while others will not. Be sure to check about housing conditions before accepting a job as apartments can be very expensive in Japan, especially in metropolitan areas where most international schools are located.
