From samurai and sushi to geisha and kimono to anime and manga, Japanese culture has achieved a level of world renown shared by few nations. Japan is certainly the only country in Asia that has had such an influence on global culture. Sometimes subtle and sometimes pronounced, Japanese culture has seeped across borders and touched every country on earth.
One of the reasons behind the popularity of Japanese culture is its unique character; Japan has been described as a country where the past lives next to and in harmony with the future. In reality, however, Japan is a mix of age-old traditions that have been heavily influenced by China and the various effects of ending its 300 years of national isolation and opening its doors to the Western world some 150 years ago.
