Overview
If you are working or will work in Gyeongsangnam-do, or "Gyeongnam" for short, under EPIK or any other government-sponsored program, the main Provincial Office of Education is located in Changwon-si, which is located near Busan and is in the easternmost part of the province.
Gyeongsangnam-do is a fairly large province that is fairly well-developed due to its geopolitically and commercially strategic location with major ports at Tongyeong-si and Sacheon-si and the major cities of Busan, Ulsan, and Daegu in its vicinity. There are several designated "cities" - Changwon (the provincial capital), Gimhae, Miryang, Jinhae, Yangsan, Masan, Tongyeong, Geoje, Sacheon, and Jinju. However, most development is located in the greater Busan area in the eastern part of the province. In the western part of the province, the only cities are Jinju-si and Sacheon-si. Sacheon area includes Sacheon-eup and Samcheonpo city, but for the most part is fairly rural. Jinju, which has a population of around 300,000, is the only large city in the region.
Transportation
Gyeongnam is serviced by Gimhae International Airport (PUS), which is between Gimhae and Busan, and Sacheon Airport (HIN), which is located in Sacheon-eup and is a short distance away from Jinju-si. Although Korean and Asiana Airlines once had direct nonstop flight service from Gimhae International Airport, after the opening of Incheon International Airport (ICN) there are no longer any direct flights to US destinations; all such flights have been rerouted to Incheon. Sacheon Airport serves only domestic routes and has flights to Seoul and Jeju. Flights to Jeju are on Friday and Sunday night.
Sasang Seobu Terminal in Busan is about 10 minutes away by car from Gimhae International Airport and you can take the bus there to just about any part of Gyeongnam. You can also get to Sasang Seobu Terminal by taking the bus to Jurye from the airport and then the subway from Jurye to Sasang. Trains to Seoul depart from Busan and the fastest train service is known as the "KTX."
