Ok, this might be a stupid question, but how exactly do you use the ATM card at the ATM machine? I can read the Hangeul, but I don't know what they mean!

Most ATMs have an English menu you can access when you use an ATM card. My card is called a Check Card, and can be used at big stores in Korea such as E-Mart.

The problem is that there's no English option for ATM machines in Namhae since it's a small out-of-the-way town of 14,000. Almost no one here speaks much English. I could go to Jinju for that, but I'd have to spend 4,800 won and an hour and twenty minutes to get there (not including the trip back to Namhae).

that sucks ogedei... if you can find a busan bank there should be an english menu... my "check card" doesn't work at many atm's but it alwyas does at the busan bank and they always have an english button. the best i can suggest it to have a korean go with you and write down which buttons to choose... i still haven't figured out how to update my bank book without a korean there with me... best of luck... :)

You have to make sure it's an atm machine that will let you update your bank book. Then, dont press anything and just stick the bank book into the little slot.. it should pull it in automatically. Then it wont need your pin or anything and it will just ask you what you want to do.. on most machines it will be the last button-- 통장정리. Just press that and it should start to mark everything.. if it pulls out and it doesnt look like it is done (is on the end of the page), turn the page over and re-insert it! It'll finish automatically!

a fairly safe bet is to put in your card and then the pin code should pop up, put in your pin and it should go to a screen and the first button should be the one to press. that's usually the case. then amounts to withdraw should come up in 10,000 won increments, which is important to remember!

To withdraw money from a Korean ATM machine insert your ATM card or bank book and press the button that says:

통장정리

This is the button for withdrawal. Then, you enter your passowrd how much you want to take out.

For the banking tips--I am Korean so I had some advantages, but yeah, I didn't realize until after talking to other EPIKers that most people didn't know you could get a debit card? Well, you definitely can and you still can, and they do it right away, so if you go to a branch of your bank you can do that. Also, make sure you get the debit and not bank credit card! (I don't even know if you can get a bank credit card with just your Alien Reg.) Also, I know a lot of people are here to save money and another good thing you can do here is set up a savings account where you can have a set amount of money auto-transfer from your checking to your savings. That way, you can resist spending that and you can also get interest on it! Again, just go into your bank--probably with your co-teacher or someone who speaks Korean, if you can.
