You will need a visa and a residence permit to teach English in Korea, both of which must be obtained within 90 days of entry. A great majority of people who come to Korea to teach English have employment set up prior to arrival, though some enter the country on a tourist visa and change them after finding employment and procuring the necessary documents.
What documents are required for obtaining a visa teaching English in Korea?
- Sponsorship guarantee form (notarized) - shin won pojunso
- Contract of not less than one year and not more than two years - ko yeong kyeyakso
- Certificate of Employment - chaejik junmyungso
These three forms will be supplied by your employer. It is recommended that you arrange to have the documents one month in advance to allow for errors or anything else that may holdup the process.
In order to get sponsorship from a Korean company or academic institution you should also prepare the following:
- Statement of purpose, or short essay about why you want to teach in Korea
- Resume or CV
- Passport-size photos
- Original university/college diploma (must be at least a BA)
- Official university/college transcripts
- Criminal record check with notarization and apostille authentication
- Reference letter

longing for the english teacher position in korea
my major is the English language. I am interested in working in Korea as a teacher of the English language. I wonder if only the native speakers are hired because I am Russian. I am sure I can do well. Can you advise the possible way to find such a job there?
You can teach English in Korea if...
You can teach English in Korea if the country you are from has English as an official language of use. Therefore, all the countries that have English as its native language, and countries that use it officially, like the Philippines, India, etc.
I have no doubt that you would do well. I wish you the best in your career.
Non-Natives
What about ELTs who come from different countries? Are they eligible to teach? I'm a BA in ELT and hold Polish nationality. I have a large foreign experience. Does my non-native nationality exclude me from teaching in Korea?
Can Polish People Teach English in Korea?
Unfortunately, your non-native nationality does exclude you from being able to get a visa to teach English in Korea. These requirements are set by the Korean Immigration Bureau.
ESL Teacher
I've been working as an ESL Instructor for more than 8 years and aside from teaching, I was promoted as the Student Manager/Coordinator last year and again as the Academic Program Assistant this year. I believe that although I am not from a country which uses English as the national language, I am competent in teaching English for students of other languages. I have a Filipino citizenship but I believe that this would not hinder my desire to teach in Korea. I hope that I will be able to get some information and help from here.
Arriving on a tourist visa
I am going to arrive in South Korea by sea from Vladivostok. Can I exchange my tourist visa for a teaching visa once I am in the country (without having to leave again)? What documents should I bring from home?
Thanks

I am also Polish but I have been living in the UK for 5 years now and I am going to apply for dual citizenship next year. That will give me a British Passport. I speak English very well and I am also considering to do teaching course before going to Korea. I'm studing in UK at the moment - next year I hope to graduate with Betchelor degree. Do you think my dual citizenship would allow me to teach in Korea?
