Gate to Cheokseongnu at Jinjuseong

Jinjuseong was the main citadel of Jinju city and was the site of fierce fighting during the Imjinwaeran (1592-1598). The fortress garisson under the brilliant command of General Gim Simin resisted a major Japanese assault in the first Seige of Jinjuseong, delivering a stunning victory for the grossly outnumbered Koreans and an extremely embarassing defeat to the gigantic Japanese invasion army. The castle fell to the Japanese in the second seige, costing the lives of 70,000 Korean soldiers and civilian defenders. The pavilion of Cheokseongnu at the edge of Jinjuseong served as a primary command post for the garisson commanders.
