Are guns too easy to get in the United States?

Gun Laws in the US

The gun laws in the US are ridiculous, and Virginia is the second easiest state to get a gun in. Even after the horrible tragedy at Virginia Tech, the National Rifle Association (NRA) will no doubt continue their fight to make every type of firearm as easily accessible as possible to everyone other than convicted felons, though I wouldn't be surprised if they were for that too.

When are the gun extremists going to realize that making it harder to get guns and restricting the type of firearms people are allowed to buy will make America a safer place? But guns don't kill people, people kill people right? Wrong.

People who have a grudge and easy access to guns kill people. No one can go to a campus with a knife and murder 32 people, only people with guns.

Too late

Guns definitely kill people.  But as for getting rid of them, I'm afraid it's too late.  I would certainly like to see reduced gun sales, but how will people feel if suddenly guns are difficult to get while everyone else and their mother already have one?  I don't see a solution myself.

Americans have followed the same mentality when buying bigger cars.  If everyone else is driving a bigger SUV, shouldn't I buy a bigger one too in order to protect my family in the event of an accident?  Though I can recall reading articles that report numerous studies showing that drivers of SUV's are more likely to be involved in a car accident than those who drive normal economy cars.

It's all just an arms race.

Gun ownership in the US

The number of people and families that own guns has actually gone down from over 50% in the 1970s to less that 35% now. The main reason for this is that the number of people who hunt has decreased. Another reason is that crime in the US has gone down, which has led to less people feeling that they need a gun in the house for protection.

There are still an estimated 200,000,000 plus guns in the US, as most owners have more than one. In fact, there are more guns in the US than adults, which leaves plenty left over for kids.

Do You Know Anything About U.S. Gun Laws?

It doesn't seem so.  Do you have any support for your statements?  That is - any facts?  Merely quoting a blog or other opinion source doesn't count.  You misstate (intentionally or out of carelessness?), the position of the NRA.  People with murderous intent kill people with guns and baseball bats and poison and hands and feet and airplanes and fertilizer-laden rental vans.  What is your proposal?

Weapon of choice

Guns are the the number one killer in homicides. Just look at this - and this is no blog.

I'm curious as to whether or not tens of thousands of people die every year from airplane hijackings and fertilizer-laden rental vans. Such acts are a little more difficult than obtaining and operating a handgun. And could someone kill 32 people with a baseball bat?

Try again.

Yes

It is too easy to get guns in the US.  If you can't see that that is the reason 32 people were killed at Virginia Tech, you must be a bloody idiot.

It might have been a bomb

He might have chosen to use a bomb if he did not have access to guns?  He had access to both bombs (downloadable recipes from the internet) and guns and he chose to use guns.  The photographs of him posing with his guns display his affection for guns.  He chose guns because he liked them, not just because they were available.  The availability of guns remains a problem.

"Equalizer"

There were many interesting comments concerning ownership and use of guns. In some states, it is rather easy to purchase one and I know that if the requirements were increased or stricter, they still will be had, even if through the black market.

I believe in the right to bear arms and it proved quite useful in the early history of our country.

I also believe that guns should be an available commodity should I wish to have one.

I think I should like to have one within reach should someone decide in an early morning hour to intrude hisself/herself into my home.

We are in expectation that people will be responsible, we don't expect that irrational people will be.

A diabolical mind intent on taking out a great number of people quickly can surely find a method. As one posting stated materials are available. Of course, the effort is greater too.

Upon first arriving in Seoul and during a walk about, I was quite surprised that I didn't see gun shops. Upon learning their system of check-in and check-out of firearms from the local police units, I thought, too, that was a rather unique system of control. Our military uses that system within their base units.
