Teaching English in China has become an increasingly popular choice with expats looking to live abroad for a year or two and experience another culture. As the country's economy has continued to grow at record levels, salaries for TEFL jobs in China have risen to a comfortable point and people no longer have to dip into their savings to live and travel there.
Another reason for the increase in teachers heading to China is the increase in popularity of studying Chinese, which is also closely related to the country's economic rise. Instructors in the countryside can expect to make at least $500/month with free housing, and twice that or more when teaching English in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and other large cities. Most TEFL jobs in China now also offer some sort of flight reimbursement and completion bonus so be sure to look at more than just the base salary when searching for a job.
With the rise in popularity of learning English among the ever-increasing
number of Chinese people with disposable income, many local entrepreneurs looking get a piece of the action have entered the English school industry. Unfortunately, the number of cases where teachers have come to China only to find that work conditions are not what were stated in the contract they signed has also risen and people are having to deal with contract discrepancies common with English teachers in Korea and Taiwan, such as more teaching hours, no over-time pay, and even decreased salaries, more and more.
So, before you pay for that ticket to fly to your TEFL job in China, make sure you do your homework and find out as much as possible about the school, the owner, and the recruiter if you use one. Ask for email address for prior
teachers and be wary of places that "can't" provide them.
