As the three Korean kingdoms continued to selectively import and localize Chinese cultural aspects, Chinese philosophy and mysticism also took root in Korean culture along with Buddhism. Confucianism and Daoism, both native traditions to the Chinese lands that shaped the character and psyche of Chinese for eons, had a profound impact on the development of Korean worldviews and society. Confucian notions of the state with a responsible leadership and a well-ordered society served as a political and social ideal while Daoism, which promoted the attainment of longevity and the seeking of harmony among the natural forces, had much in common with indigenous Korean shamanistic beliefs and thus mingled with local traditions and influenced perspectives on nature and medicinal practices.
