A man for all seasons, Mullah Mustapha Barzani is the only Kurdish leader in the 20th century who rose to national prominence among his people, linking 50 years of Kurdish struggle.
Born in 1903 under the rule of Ottoman Turkey, Barzani spent almost his entire life in defense of his people's national rights. His spearheading of uprisings in Iraq, his role in the Kurdish Republic of Mahabad (Iran), his legendary crossing into the Soviet Union in 1947, and his leadership of the 1961 Kurdish Revolution are landmarks in Kurdish history and in the life of a truly remarkable man.
A man of imposing physical presence, the soft-spoken leader embraced a very simple lifestyle that kept him close to his followers. His profound understanding of his peoples' needs and aspirations enabled him to win support from Kurds of all walks of life, as did his capacity to fathom human nature and to accurately judge character.
Many Kurds remember with great fondness Barzani's surehanded leadership, and place him among the most celebrated and beloved Kurdish heros.
