What does this mean? 하였다

This is just a specific question. What does ...하였다 mean? I can't parse it, can't find 하이다 in my dictionary. My first guess was some kind of passivization of 하다 but that doesn't seem to fit the context so I'm confused.

TIA, -AS

Example?

Do you have an example of where this is used?

I don't know Korean (and am barely learning), but I can look up the grammatical forms.

The way I understand ...

Korean written form is different from Korean spoken form, more so than English.  했다 and 하였다 are the same, but rarely would 하였다 be said, unless in formal circumstances. Actually, 했다 is the contraction of 하였다. Of course both are past tense.

This is as I understand it.

Hmm...

That's what I thought at first. I always get mixed up in verb tenses. While we're on the subject, perhaps we can make a list of basic common verbs and show their conjugations to make things convenient for those of us that are barely learning the language. :)
