Where to Get Traveler's Checks in Korea

Where can I get traveler's checks in Korea?

All of the search results for traveler's check in Korea relate to exchanging traveler's checks into Korean won. I am going abroad and want to take traveler's checks with me from Korea.

Travellers' cheques

Surely you will be able to buy them at your local bank.  I would guess they will order them from a travellers' cheque retail outlet and have them delivered, so make sure you have a comfortable few days to wait for them.  They might put commission on top of the original rate too.  If your local bank doesn't sell them, there should be a foreign currency retail outlet somewhere there.  Does that help, or is that just bloody obvious?

Travel agent

Another option is you can get your travellers' cheques through a travel agent (they will order them from a retailer), but be sure to check them before taking them away because retailers have been known to send cash instead of cheques on the odd occasion.

warning

just to let you know - i have a friend (here in korea) who brought travellers cheques to thailand and wasn't able to exchange them anywhere because they were from korea... something about the routing number (or something... not sure what, if i see him i'll ask again) on them doesn't make sense to other countries and they always get returned... you might be better off putting the money on your credit card and using that... like i said, if i see my friend, i'll ask him for details again...

Korea Traveler's Cheques

That's interesting. I would be interested to hear about why he wasn't able to use traveler's cheques he bought in Korea when he went to Thailand.

north or south?

well, i saw him this weekend and he told me... the cheques don't have any specific bank address on them - they just say "korea" - not SOUTH or NORTH - so when the banks in thailand send the cheques back here to the bank they came from the korean bank sends them back saying "we don't know if these are from the NORTH or not". anyway, he had over 2000$ in travellers cheques and was only able to find ONE bank in the middle of nowhere on the burmese border that would accept them... he had been to about 8 or 9 other banks before that. so just be aware that this could happen to you if you use travellers cheques from korea... the system may have changed by now, (this happened to him about 2 years ago) but i wouldn't chance it. best of luck.

Traveler's Cheques in Korea

Thanks for the advice...no Korean traveler's cheques for me.

I just send money home through a wire transfer at my bank.
